Japan carriers to form global JV

12/26/2007 11:01:09 AM

All Nippon Airways, Nippon Express and Kintetsu World Express have agreed to set up a joint venture April 1 to handle international air cargo services for the Asian region.

All Nippon Airways, or ANA, will hold 34 percent, while Nippon Express and Kintetsu will each hold 28 percent of the new company. They are looking for transport companies to buy the remaining 10 percent stake.

Nippon Express and Kintetsu have been in talks to develop a small-package shipping service that would deliver items such as samples and documents.

Japanese transport companies have lagged behind their US and European competitors such as DHL and FedEx in international air cargo.

But they hope the new venture will help them take advantage of growing demand for shipping services within Asia.

The joint venture will eventually use a cargo transport hub terminal, which ANA is planning to construct in Naha, Okinawa, in the fiscal year ending March 2010.
