The cost of transporting goods between factories, warehouses and ports in India has risen as road transporters and railways pass on the increase in fuel prices to their clients.
The costs of road and rail transportation have gone up as much as 12-15 percent in India’s already pricey market, which prevents many small manufacturers from entering the global market.
The cost of transporting cargo over 1km of road can be up to 50 percent higher than US rates. The country spends on average US$1,148 for handling an import cargo container and $820 on an export container. Singapore, for example, spends $367 on an import container while China spends a mere $390 on an export container.
