Bahrain Inaugurates Box Port

12/9/2009 10:19:35 AM

Bahrain officially inaugurated its new Khalifa Bin Salman Port in ceremonies attended by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

The $136.3 million port, which has been open for business since April, includes a container terminal with a capacity of 1.1 million 20-foot containers a year, as well as general breakbulk and roll-on, roll-off cargo, and a cruise terminal.

The container terminal, which is managed and operated by APM Terminals, has a capacity four times larger than the capacity of Mina Salman Port, which has been Bahrain's main port over the past 50 years. It will ultimately be able to accommodate vessels with a draft of 50 feet.

The port was built on 272 acres of reclaimed land on the northeastern side of the island nation. It has 5,905 feet of berth space.
