For the ninth consecutive month, the shipping industry in India has seen growth in cargo traffic across the major ports, the Times of India reported.
In April, the first month of the financial year 2011, cargo traffic was up 2.7% percent while container cargo posted a growth of 22.7 percent compared with the same period in 2009.
Among the ports, Kochi recorded the highest increase in cargo in April 2010, a 27.3 percent rise at 1.3 million tonnes compared to one million tonnes in April 2009.
Kandla port increased 17.7 percent to 6.3 million tonnes, followed by Mumbai and JNPT. The increase was mainly on account of a higher growth in container cargo traffic. Chennai saw the highest container cargo increase of 49.6 percent at 2.4 million tonnes compared with the same month last year.
