Samskip Increases Oslofjord Frequency

8/13/2010 10:27:45 AM

Icelandic carrier Samskip Multimodal Container Logistics said it will increase the frequency of its new Oslofjord service to weekly from biweekly at the end of August to accommodate demand for refrigerated cargo shipments.

The weekly service will provide direct calls between Rotterdam and Hamburg and the ports of Stavanger, Haugesund, Bergen and Alesund in Norway.

“We have already started this service on a bi-weekly basis in June, but from the end of August we will be offering departures on a weekly basis to cater for increased demand during the fish season,” said Caesar Luikenaar, Samskip’s route manager for Norway services.

Samskip said it provides this service with its own fleet of equipment on a door-to-door basis, while offering a quay-to-quay service for shippers’ owned containers.

Samskip will also introduce 45-foot containers to the Norwegain market, enabling customers to switch from using trailer cargo to the more environmentally friendly transport method of waterborne 45-foot containers.

Samskip’s new service will open up western Norway to the company’s pan-European network.

Calling at both the RST and ECT terminals, the Oslofjord service is using Rotterdam as the main hub for the hinterland of Benelux, France and Germany and offers links to its other multimodal and shortsea services to the UK, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Italy. The service will depart the end of the week to arrive in Norway early the week after.
