Airlines facing pilot shortage

9/10/2010 10:05:57 AM

As airlines move to increase and renew fleets, they are facing possible pilot shortages.

Cathay Pacific, Qantas and Emirates alone are expecting deliveries of about 400 planes in the near future.

Airlines worldwide are estimated to need an average of 49,900 pilots each year from 2010 to 2030, but current training capacity maxes out at closer to 47,000.

One initial response from airlines has been to engage in bidding wars for captains.
