Freight volumes at Dubai International and the new Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International airports could rise by 48% over the next five years, it has been claimed.
In its latest traffic forecast, Dubai Airports said cargo tonnage, which totalled 1.9 million in 2009, would exceed three million tonnes by the end of 2015.
The company said this year alone, freight volumes are expected to rise by 12.2%, year on year.
The report said the key drivers for this increase were improving economic conditions, Dubai’s geocentric location and anticipated capacity increases by Emirates and other carriers.
Dubai International has capacity for 2.5 million tonnes of freight a year.
Al Maktoum International, which opened to cargo in the summer, features an A380-compatible runway, 64 remote stands and a cargo terminal capable of handling 250,000 tonnes a year, expandable to 600,000 tonnes as future phases of the development are completed.
