Felixstowe Port bosses say they do not expect the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan to have a major impact on cargo imported through Britain’s biggest container terminal, reported the Evening Star (Ipswich).
Felixstowe does a huge amount of business with the Far East through its deep-water trade, but most of it is with China. There is some import and export trade with Japan, but the disaster-hit country’s links are mostly with other UK ports.
Six ports in Japan have been damaged by the quake, with four of them left with severe damage. One of the major container ports, Kashima, is apparently also out of action, as is Hitachinaka, a smaller port, which handles mainly cars, though the Japanese authorities are hoping it won’t be for more than a few weeks.
