South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM) stated that total container cargo volume at Korea's ports measured 1.89 million TEUs for July, which is 13.2 percent up from the same period last year, reported Maeil Business Newspaper.
Import and export containers measured 1.15 million TEUs, while transhipment cargo logged 0.70 million TEU, rising 8.4 percent and 21.1 percent repectively from the same period last year.
Korea's aggregate cargo volume has been crossing 1.80 million TEUs for five months straight since March last year, setting a new record every month, while transhipment spiked at a two-digit growth rate.
Busan Port, which saw a 17 percent increase from last year to 1.45 million TEUs, benefited from active trade with Russia and Europe, which raised import and export cargo volume by 12.2 percent. As more ship operators expanded use of Busan port, transhipment traffic also rose 22.3 percent.
Incheon port, which went through a 11.5 percent fall in cargo volume last month, made an upturn as trade with China and Vietnam helped reach a 3.1 percent expansion to reach 0.16 million TEUs. Meanwhile, Gwangyang Port saw lower volume by 2.2 percent at 0.18 million TEUs.
