Schenker to Operate Freight Trains From New UK Box Port

The London Gateway deep-sea container port and distribution hub will offer rail service across the U.K. on the day it opens in the fourth quarter of 2013.   DB Schenker Rail will operate at least four daily two-way services with 2,300-foot freight trains, among the longest in the U.K., to a range of inland terminals including potential new locations.   An agreement with the Dubai-based DP World-owned terminal also calls for DB Schenker to develop rail freight services to mainland Europe through the Channel Tunnel between the U.K. and France.   London Gateway, situated on the northern bank of the Thames River estuary 25 miles from the U.K.’s capital city, will have an initial annual capacity of 3.5 million 20-foot-equivalent units. Its 9 million square foot logistics-distribution hub will be Europe’s biggest.   The Journal of Commerce Online
