The Port of Houston handled 176,900 20-foot-equivalent units in August, down 5.4 percent from the previous month and 4.7 percent year-over-year.

Loaded containers in August totaled 139,334 TEUs, down from 140,692 TEUs in August 2012. Monthly loaded exports totaled 79,209 TEUs, versus 84,291 TEUs in the same month last year, while loaded imports were 60,125 TEUs, versus 56,401 TEUs. The volume of monthly empty containers was 37,566 TEUs, dropping 16.5 percent from 45,006 TEUs in August 2012. Empty imports were 23,116 in August, versus 32,603 in the same month in the previous year, and empty exports were 14,450 TEUs, versus 12,403 TEUs in August 2012.
Year-to-date, the Texas port moved a total of 1.34 million TEUs, up 5.7 percent from 1.27 million TEUs in first eight months of 2012. From January to August, loaded imports totaled 419,751 TEUs, up 5.8 percent year-over-year, and loaded exports reached 610,980 TEUs, up 4.8 percent. Total loaded containers year-to-date equaled 1.03 million TEUs, increasing 5.2 percent from 979,755 in the same period last year. Meanwhile, empty imports in the first eight months of 2013 rose 10.7 percent versus the first eight months of the previous year, reaching 229,981 TEUs, while empty exports fell 1.0 percent to 81,717 TEUs. Total empties accounted for 311,698 TEUs, up 7.4 percent.
