UNITED Airlines plans to commence nonstop, six-times-weekly flights between Los Angeles and Melbourne using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner starting October 26, pending government approval.
United is the North American launch customer for the B787-9 and this will be its first international deployment of the aircraft type.
With the launch of nonstop Los Angeles-Melbourne service, the carrier said it will end service between Melbourne and Sydney.
Flight 98 will depart Los Angeles at 2230 hrs daily, except Tuesday and Thursday, and arrive in Melbourne at 0915 two days later (all times local). On Thursday, flight 98 will depart Los Angeles at 2130 and arrive in Melbourne at 2015 two days later.
On the return, flight 99 will depart Melbourne at 1115 daily, except Thursday and Saturday, and arrive in Los Angeles at 0650 the same day. On Saturday, flight 99 will depart Melbourne at 1515 and arrive in Los Angeles at 1050 the same day.
Flying times will be 15 hours and 45 minutes westbound, and 14 hours and 35 minutes eastbound. The airline has timed the new flights to connect at Los Angeles with its service network across the United States, Canada and Latin America. The new service will allow United to provide one-stop service to Melbourne from 37 US cities.
