Dubai-based DP World has awarded a US$750 million contract to British firm Laing O'Rourke and Belgium's Dredging International to build the first phase of London Gateway, a new container port and logistics park in the UK, AFP reported.
Construction work will begin later this year at the 1,500-acre site, due to open late 2010. The first ships will arrive in early 2011.
It is the first major contract awarded in the $3 billion project, due to be constructed over the next 10 to 15 years.
DP World first announced the London Gateway project in November 2006, with the stated aim of being the most technically advanced container port in the world.
