Container ships are now sailing between Cai Lan, northeastern Quang Ninh province, to China, including Hong Kong, Asia Pulse reported.
The route between northern Vietnam's first deep-water port, capable of accommodating freighters of up to 50,000 tonnes DWT, was inaugurated on December 18.
The opening of the new route followed Swiss shipping company MSC's test voyages of 1,090 TEU vessels that began with The Wellington in November.
Six container ships have now docked in the port at the rate of one a week.
The Vietnam Maritime Administration, the Quang Ninh Port Company and the Waterway Project Construction Corporation have also opened a 130 metre by 10 metre deep channel at the port.
Construction of the channel, completed at a cost of almost $US18 million, to accommodate vessels at the northern entry to the port, began in 2007.
