Vietnam could lose US$1.5 billion a year if the proposed port in central Khanh Hoa Province's Van Phong Bay does not include wharves that can accommodate big ships, Thai News Service reported.
Currently, sea vessels headed for the US or Europe from Vietnam carrying cargo of more than 4,000 TEUs must stop in Singaporean ports, where they are charged at least US$400 more for every TEU.
Most of the container ships in Vietnam were 2,000-4,000 TEUs, but one wharf accommodating ships with 15,000 TEUs would be preferable to two wharves of 6,000-9,000s TEU each.
