Box numbers rise on both sides of Pacific

The total number of cargo containers shipped through the Port of Long Beach declined 13.8 percent in August, compared with the same month a year ago.   It was the smallest year-to-year decline for any month since November 2008.   Hong Kong also recorded growing throughput figures in August, with the fall in year-on-year volumes slowing to 10.7 percent, the narrowest in the past nine months.   Increasing box numbers at both sides of the Pacific corresponded with an increase in retail spending in the US in August that showed a 2.7 percent rise.   Cargonews Asia
