DHL starts 767 transatlantic freighter service

9/25/2009 10:46:11 AM

DHL Express said it has begun its first operations with a series of six Boeing 767 extended range freighters.

The first flight using the new planes left DHL Express’ hub in Leipzig, Germany, Tuesday bound for New York’s JFK International Airport. The planes, to be operated by DHL’s U.K.-based DHL Air subsidiary, will be primarily employed on routes from England’s East Midlands International Airport and Leipzig to New York and Cincinnati, DHL’s North America hub for transatlantic air cargo.

The new planes will replace the shared capacity of MD-11F aircraft provided through a joint venture with Lufthansa Cargo. The 767 freighters provide a 4 percent fuel savings over the MD-11s, DHL added.
