Hong Kong port handled 5.6 million TEUs of containers in the third quarter, down 16 percent over last year, with laden containers at 4.8 million TEUs, down 13 percent, and empty containers at 0.8 million TEUs, down 28 percent.
Hong Kong saw total port cargo throughput fall to 64.4 million tonnes in the third quarter of the year, down four percent over the same period last year, Xinhua reported.
Within this total, inward port cargo dropped two percent to 36.3 million tonnes and outward port cargo fell seven percent to 28.1 million tonnes.
Seaborne cargo fell seven percent to 43.1 million tonnes over the same period last year, while river cargo rose one percent to 21.3 million tonnes.
Imports rose five percent to 19.5 million tonnes while inward transhipments fell nine percent to 16.8 million tonnes in the third quarter. Exports and outward transhipments dropped eight percent to 10. 3 million tonnes and six percent to 17.8 million tonnes.
Of the laden containers, inward containers fell 13 percent to 2.3 million TEUs and outward containers fell 13 percent to 2.5 million TEUs. Seaborne and river laden containers fell 14 percent and 10 percent to 3.5 million TEUs and 1.3 million TEUs.
In the third quarter, the number of ocean vessel arrivals dropped one percent to 8,780, with the total capacity rising one percent to 94.3 million net registered tonnes. The number of river vessel arrivals dipped 4 percent to 43,920, with the total capacity rising 1 percent to 24.9 million net registered tonnes.
