OOCL said it will impose a general rate increase on westbound trans-Atlantic cargo as of April 1.
The move follows increases on the trade lane that were announced recently by several other carriers including NYK, Hanjin Shipping and Mediterranean Shipping Co.
OOCL said current ocean freight rates continue to be below the required level to cover basic operating costs or transportation costs.
It will increase rates for cargo loading or discharging at ports in the United States or Mexico by $400 per 20-foot container and $500 per 40-foot container.
The rate for cargo loading or discharging at Montreal will be $320 per TEU and $400 per FEU.
OOCL said it will announce further increases to be applied during 2010 “in due course.”
