In March, cargo traffic at major ports in India improved by 2.4 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) to 51.6 million tonnes, Euclid Infotech reported.
Cargo volume has crossed the 50 million tonne mark in a month for three times since the first instance in March 2009 and the second in January 2010 when major ports reported cargo volume of 50.4 and 51.2 million tonnes, respectively.
Container cargo traffic for March stood at 9.6 million tonnes, up by 17 percent year-on-year, while container traffic at Jawaharlal Nehru port (JNP) stood at five million tonnes, up 15 percent year-on-year.
Six out of thirteen major ports reported growth in cargo traffic in March. Cochin port reported the highest increase of 42 percent year-on-year followed by Mormugao, which was at 33 percent year-on-year, Kandla at 21 percent year-on-year and JNP at 15 percent year-on-year.
