The volume of containers handled by the Port of Rotterdam increased by 17.7 percent in the first six months of the year, the Rotterdam Port Authority reported Thursday.
Container throughput totaled 5.4 million 20-foot equivalent units in the half year, compared to 4.6 million in the first half of 2009.
Inbound containers, both loaded and empty, totaled 2.8 million TEUs, up 17.9 percent from a year earlier. Outbound containers, both loaded and empty, totaled 2.7 million TEUs, up 17.5 percent.
The port handled 213 million metric tons of cargo in the first half, up 14.8 percent from a year ago. Outgoing trade rose by 15 percent to 62 million metric tons, incoming by 14.7 percent to 150 million metric tons.
The tonnage of breakbulk cargo was up 21 percent, and roll-on, roll-off cargo up 2 percent in the six-month period.
