Savannah Handles Record Container Throughput

10/18/2010 10:20:50 AM

Container throughput in the Port of Savannah jumped 20.1 percent in the first quarter of fiscal 2011 ended Sept. 30, to 742,637 20-foot equivalent units, compared to 618,256 TEUs in the same quarter last year, when volume was still depressed by the recession.

The Georgia Ports Authority said the volume handled by the port in the first quarter of its fiscal year 2011 was a new quarterly record, surpassing the previous record of 718,251 TEUs set in the first quarter of fiscal 2008, before the recession set in.

At the Port of Brunswick, the GPA handled 101,896 auto units in the quarter, an increase of 56.4 percent compared with first quarter fiscal 2010.

Vessel calls at the Port of Brunswick are also up 31.8 percent with 112 calls for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 compared with the same period in fiscal 2010.
