Container throughput at major ports in India for the April-October period surged 12 percent over the same period last year, the Indian Ports Association said Thursday.
Total volume for the first seven months of fiscal 2010-11 was estimated at 4.4 million 20-foot equivalent units compared with 3.9 million TEUs in the year-ago period.
Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva), the country’s largest container port, handled 2.5 million TEUs, up 9 percent from 2.3 million TEUs a year earlier.
“Despite recent operational setbacks, we are on track to surpass the previous fiscal year’s record volume of 4.06 million TEUs,” a Nehru official said.
Traffic at Chennai climbed 30.5 percent to 891,000 TEUs. Kolkata handled 307,000 TEUs, up from 282,000 TEUs. Tuticorin moved 268,000 TEUs compared with 253,000 TEUs. At Cochin, volume rose to 197,000 TEUs from 174,000 TEUs.
According to the IPA, overall tonnage at the 13 publicly-owned major ports for April through October was up 0.5 percent to 316 million tons. Kandla was the top cargo handler with throughput of 43.8 million tons followed by Visakhapatnam with 38.3 million tons.
