Ocean carrier CMA CGM announced will impose a series of rate hikes and peak season surcharges on Asia-Europe trade lanes in August even as lines confront a glut of capacity that has depressed rates over recent months.
The world’s third-largest carrier will introduce a peak season surcharge of $250 per 20-foot container from all Asian ports, including Japan, South East Asia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to North Europe — and from Portugal to Russia – effective August. 1.
The Marseille-based operator also will hike freight rates by $250 per TEU on August 1 on routes from Asia, including Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and South East Asia to the Mediterranean, including the Black Sea, North Africa, the Western Mediterranean, the East Med and Adriatic.
CMA CGM said it will also add a $25-per-TEU peak season surcharge August 1 on Asia-Mediterranean routes.
CMA CGM simultaneously announced a series of overweight surcharges on Asia- Mediterranean trade, citing the “huge” demand in heavy cargo moving from Asia and the high level of demand for 20-foot containers.
From August 1 shippers must pay an additional $200 for 20 foot containers weighing over 20 tons gross tons, and $275 for 20 foot containers over 26 tons from Asia to the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.
From Asia to the Western Mediterranean and Adriatic, CMA CGM is levying a surcharge of $50 for 20 foot containers over 20 tons, effective August 1.
