Hapag-Lloyd imposed an “emergency revenue charge” on all containers moving from the Indian Subcontinent to the U.S. and Canada.
The planned charges, starting Jan. 20, will be $320 per 20-foot container, $400 per 40-foot container, $450 per 40-foot high cube container and $506 per 45-foot high cube container.
Separately, the German carrier said it will apply a general rate increase on westbound trade from the Subcontinent to Europe and the Mediterranean, effective Feb. 1.
All cargo bound for destinations in North Continent, East/West Mediterranean and Black Sea region will attract an increase of $200 per TEU.
The Subcontinent region includes ports in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
