LOS ANGELES International Airport (LAX) has had an increase in cargo tonnage at five per cent year on year to 1.9 million from 1.86 million due to new international services, strengthening Southern California economy and improving Asia-Pacific regional trade.
The big increase was in air mail sector, up 20.3 per cent to 96,779 from 80,442 in 2011 with freighted goods up 4.3 per cent to 1.86 million tons, according to its operators Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA).
Passenger traffic increased less at 2.9 per cent to 63,688,121 passengers with domestic volume up 3.2 per cent. International traffic increased 2.5 per cent to 17,152,914 passengers from 16,731,324 in 2011.
Landings and takeoffs increased 0.2 per cent to 605,480 in 2012 from 603,912 year on year.
