The anchoring of the first container vessel at the Kollam cargo port on last Thursday afternoon triggered some hopes on the port becoming operational soon, reported The Hindu.
The port, which was commissioned in October 2007, has been largely lying idle due to various technical reasons.
Karuthal , the multi-purpose 1,600 DWT container vessel, arrived at the Kollam port as part of a trial run calling at various small ports of the state. The ship coming from Dubai, carrying 94 containers, docked at the Kollam port after calling at the Beypore and Vizhinjam ports. The ship will offload the cargo at Kochi.
On docking at the Kollam port the captain of the ship Zaw Win Thein said that the port appeared very calm and looked ideal for receiving ships. The docking was altogether more comfortable than what was experienced at the Vizhinjam and Beypore ports, he said. What was urgently needed for the development of the port was infrastructure.
Cranes capable of handling containers have not been installed at the port.
