The Port of Hamburg has posted a nine per cent increase in first quarter container volume to 2.4 million TEU, with more than half - 1.3 million TEU - attributed to trade with Asia.
Overall cargo tonnage reached 35.6 million tonnes of which 10.4 million tonnes were bulk cargo, an increase of 3.5 per cent year on year, according to Bloomberg. General cargo reached 25.2 million tonnes, up 0.8 per cent.
Container handling for China and Hong Kong reached 705,000 TEU, 30 per cent of Hamburg total quarterly throughput, and up 10.5 per cent year on year.
Hamburg's trade with the Baltic region, the bulk of its feeder services, was up 6.5 per cent year on year. Its main trading partner Russia totalled 168,000 TEU during the quarter, up four per cent.
The Port of Hamburg said its quarterly box volume was 2.3 per cent above that of its North Range rivals, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Bremerhaven, which represents a 1.4 per cent increase in market share or 26.8 per cent.
