NYK said it took delivery Tuesday of a new car carrier, Aries Leader, which is the first post-Panamax car carrier in Japan.
The ship, capable of carrying 7,000 units, was built at Shin Kurushima Dockyard's Onishi Shipyard in Ehime prefecture.
The ship includes energy-saving technology such as an air-lubrication system and a hybrid turbocharger, both of which have been installed on a car carrier for the first time, in addition to an electronically controlled engine and the use of water-emulsified fuel in the boiler.
NYK said, "As a result, we expect a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per unit compared with existing large pure car carriers."
Air-lubrication systems reduce the friction between a vessel’s hull and seawater by supplying air to the vessel’s bottom and thus generating bubbles.
