SHANGHAI, the world's busiest container port, posted a 6.9 per cent increase in container volume in April to 3.02 million TEU year on year, setting a monthly record, reports Xinhua.
The port in the month handled a total of 67.65 million tonnes of cargo, up 2.1 per cent. Foreign trade cargo via the port increased 9.5 per cent year on year to 34.49 million tonnes, showing a steady growth trend.
The port's water-water transshipments amounted to 1.44 million TEU, accounting for 47.88 per cent of its total container volume. Yangshan Deep Water Port's container throughput went up 3.2 per cent year on year to 1.25 million TEU.
But affected by the decline of the bulk cargo, the port's overall cargo volume in April was only slightly higher than the same period last year and has slipped a bit from last month.
