CONSTRUCTION of a new wharf at the Port of Tacoma has recently started, the port reports.
T
he construction company, Manson Construction, which marked the commencement of the project by driving the first of 820 concrete pilings into the Blair Waterway at the end of August, expects the work to be completed by the middle of February 2008.
The Port of Tacoma's communications and media relations manager, Mike Wasem, told the Shipping Gazette by email that the port was not at liberty to say who the wharf was being built for at this early stage.
Mr Wasem said: "Given the competitive market for North American gateway facilities with strong intermodal connections, the Port of Tacoma has received a high level of interest from major shipping lines around the world. So, while there are discussions with these lines, we are not at a point that any announcement is near."
The 1,200-foot berth will be situated adjacent to the former Kaiser Aluminium Smelter site, the port said.
