German train drivers threaten fresh strike

2/26/2008 11:23:53 AM

Germany's GDL train drivers' union threatened to stage fresh strikes if a new wage contract for its members is not signed by March 7.

The union, which carried out a series of disruptive strikes last year, agreed with national rail operator Deutsche Bahn last month on a pay increase and a new contract for the drivers.

However, GDL is angry that final details of the accord have yet to be settled, particularly on the issue of how future wage talks will be co-ordinated with other rail unions.

GDL leader Manfred Schell said if the train drivers' wage contract has not been signed by then, there will unavoidably be industrial action.
