Hamburg Süd said the 5,900-TEU containership Rio de Janeiro was christened in at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME) yard in Okpo Korea on Tuesday.
It is the second in a series of six identical containerships being built by the company, the largest in the history of Hamburg Süd.
Following its delivery this week, the ship will initially be phased into Hamburg Süd's Asia/East Coast South America service, before being deployed on the shipping group's Europe/East Coast South America route in the autumn.
The "Rio" class ships will then gradually replace the "Monte" vessels, which are to be deployed in the trades between Asia and South America East Coast.
