The Port of Felixstowe said an additional rail service will connect it with Birmingham.
The new service, the 27th daily departure from the port, is operated by First GBRf, with the service being contracted to Mediterranean Shipping Co. The new 22-wagon train provides a third daily scheduled connection to Hams Hall, near Birmingham, and MSC’s second contract service to Hams Hall. Operating from Monday to Saturday each week, the service increases First GBRf services operating from Felixstowe to a total of five intermodal trains per day.
Dan Everitt, managing director of MSC UK, said most of the freight carried on the new service will be "changing mode from road to rail. As a result the new train will help reduce traffic levels on one of the major trunk routes in the country, the A14, by saving the equivalent of 22,000 lorry journeys per year."
