London Heathrow Cargo Growth Slows

10/12/2010 10:08:09 AM

Cargo traffic at London Heathrow grew 12.2 percent in September over the same month a year ago, but freight demand showed signs of slipping with the airport’s smallest monthly tonnage since April.

Heathrow’s cargo tonnage fell 2.7 percent in September compared to August, the second straight month-to-month decline, airport manager BAA reported.

The British airport, one of Europe’s largest air freight hubs, is coming up to the seasonal high period in expedited shipping and figures this fall will start running into comparisons with last year’s strong and sudden air cargo upturn.

Heathrow’s cargo tonnage, which fell 8.7 percent in 2009, was up 20.1 percent in the first nine months of this year over the same period the year before. This year’s cargo traffic also was 3.3 percent better than the airport saw in the first nine months of 2008.
