11/12/2010 9:32:55 AM

Frankfurt airport boosted cargo traffic 15.8 percent from a year ago to an all time monthly high as freight outpaced passenger growth at Europe's largest air cargo hub.

The airport handled a record 206,085 metric tons of freight in October, topping the previous monthly peak of 204,332 metric tons in May 2010.

Cargo grew nearly twice as fast as passenger traffic, which increased a healthy 8.5 percent in October to 5.02 million.

Frankfurt's freight and mail traffic jumped 24.6 percent in the first 10 months of the year to 1.887 million metric tons, according to airport operator Fraport.

Cargo traffic at Fraport's six airports - Frankfurt, Antalya, Turkey, Lima, Peru, and Burgas and Varna in Bulgaria -- increased 14.8 percent in October to 237,500 tons.

Fraport group freight traffic rose 24 percent in the first 10 months to 2.1 million tons.
