Box volumes fall at US East Coast ports

10/8/2011 10:06:49 AM

The holiday shipping season is off to a sputtering start, especially at Hampton Roads, reported The Virginian-Pilot & The Ledger-Star.

The port of Hampton Roads and its three largest East Coast competitors all reported lower container volumes in August. Hampton Roads' slide, however, was significantly greater than that of the other ports.

Hampton Roads's container volume fell 13.2 percent compared with August 2010, dropping from 175,122 TEUs to 151,980 TEUs, the Virginia Port Authority reported.

The port of New York/New Jersey, the biggest on the East Coast, reported a slight decline of 0.5 percent in August, to 371,120 units from 372,985. New York/New Jersey, unlike Hampton Roads and the other two ports, counts only loaded containers.

The port of Savannah, the No. 2 East Coast port, handled 237,749 units in August, a drop of 4.3 percent from August 2010.

Charleston, the fourth largest, behind No. 3 Hampton Roads, reported a 2.7 percent year-to-year decline, handling 114,833 units in August.
