Emirates Shipping Sets Congestion Fees at African Ports

12/1/2011 9:48:45 AM

Emirates Shipping Line is imposing port congestion surcharges on all inbound containers handled at Mombasa, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Effective Dec. 1, the planned surcharge will be $250 per 20-foot equivalent unit. The fee will apply to cargo shipped on ESL’s Africa-Far East-Asia and Gulf Indian subcontinent-Africa services for discharge at the two East African ports.

The Middle East-based carrier said it imposing the emergency surcharges because the ports suffer from persistent berthing delays and low productivity.

ESL operates the AFA in conjunction with French ocean carrier CMA CGM, covering Port Kelang, Singapore, Colombo, Mombasa, Tanga, Dar es Salaam, and back to Port Kelang. The GIA, which ESL operates independently with three 1,800-TEU vessels, calls Karachi, Sharjah, Jebel Ali, Mombasa, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and Karachi.
