Höegh Autoliners has entered into a long-term strategic co-operation with Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corp (Vinashin), which includes the construction of four large Pure Car Truck Carriers (PCTCs) with further options.
The co-operation provides for technology transfer and includes participation by Det Norske Veritas and DeltaMarin (ship design, Finland).
The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2009.
The co-operation includes projects with the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (NORAD), Det norske Veritas (DNV) and Höegh Autoliners for the development of the Vietnamese shipbuilding industry.
According to Thor Jørgen Guttormsen, CEO of Höegh Autoliners, the aim of the strategic co-operation is to develop an alternative source for new car carriers, and gives Höegh access to building capacity for car carriers from another source in addition to its existing yard relations.
Together with DeltaMartin, Höegh Autoliners has developed a new Ro-Ro car carrier design based on the most modern technology with an emphasis on environmental features.
The Höegh Horizon class Pure Car Truck Carrier will have greater cargo capacity than vessels with the same dimensions, and can carry about 7,000 car equivalent units. Designed to have a reduced negative effect on the environment, it includes provisions for the inclusion of new technologies being developed by Höegh, such as ballast water treatment.
Höegh Autoliners supplies transportation services to the world’s car manufacturers and operates in a network of trade systems from the main export areas for new cars in US, the Far East and Europe. It carried about 1.8 million vehicles this year, double the volume in 2000.
According to volume estimates from the car manufacturers, Höegh Autoliners will need four to five new car carriers per year.
The company’s remaining orderbook, including vessels to be chartered, comprises:
- Five PCTCs from Daewoo (Korea), scheduled for delivery between 2007 and 2009
- Four PCTCs from Tsuneishi Cebu (Philippines), scheduled for delivery between 2007 and 2008
- Two PCTCs from Uljanik (Croatia), due for delivery in 2007
- Four PCTCs from Vinashin (Vietnam), scheduled for delivery between 2009 and 2011
- Two Ro/Ro (Airbus) from Singaport MT, due for delivery in 2008
