Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security will investigate the security of container shipments after thieves reportedly stole more than $375,000 worth of cashews from containers in 2007.
A directive from Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong has ordered the ministry to search for weak spots in the system of transporting, loading and unloading goods from containers, with offenders to be "severely penalized" in the future.
Earlier this month, police busted a gang stealing farm products worth billions of dong from sealed containers in Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces of Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Long An. According to the Vietnam Cashew Associations annual report, about 68 tons of cashews, worth more than $375,000, meant for export were stolen from their containers last year."
