Workers at Hapag-Lloyd, the container shipping business of German travel group TUI, plan to lodge a protest against a possible sale of the unit to a foreign investor, the German News Digest reported.
Hapag-Lloyd workers in Europe, Asia and America will gather to voice their discontent with a sale to the Singapore-based shipping group Neptune Orient Lines (NOL), stating clearly once again that they prefer the group of Hamburg-based investors as a buyer.
Ships in the Port of Hamburg will sound sirens in support of the local investors.
Workers are concerned that NOL would cut jobs and shut down sites if it bought TUI's shipping arm.
TUI bowed to shareholder pressure earlier this year and agreed to put Hapag-Lloyd out for sale.
