Hamburg Sud has christened its new 5,900-TEU vessel Rio Negro at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. in Okpo, South Korea.
Following the Rio de la Plata and the Rio de Janeiro, she is the third in a series of six new identical container vessels, each with the same slot capacity.
The Rio Negro is named after a tributary of the Amazon which rises in Colombia and then flows into the Amazon in Manaus, Brazil.
Following delivery on Nov. 4, the "Rio Negro" will initially be deployed in Hamburg Sud's New Good Hope Express Service, which connects Asia and South Africa with East Coast South America.
It will then be phased into the carrier's Europe-South America East Coast Service in March-April 2009.
