Demand for using the rupiah in port service transactions in Indonesia is getting stronger in the wake of the volatile rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar.
Chairperson of the Indonesian Exporters and Importers Association (IEI) Amelia Achyar believes that port services provided by state port operator Pelindo should be in the rupiah.
"Port services in Singapore and Malaysia are in the Singaporean dollar and Malaysian ringgit. Therefore, port service transactions in Indonesia should also be in the rupiah.”
She said it had been difficult for domestic exporters and importers to calculate port charges due to the volatile US dollar.
Amelia Achyar added several port service charges that were still in the US dollar were terminal handling charge (THC) and container handling charge (CHC), agent fee, document fee for import activities, and public notification to change the status of import goods.
"We hope such charges can be converted into the rupiah to boost the performances of exporters and importers. We view this only needs good will from the government and the port operator in Indonesia."
