Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), the world's third-largest shipbuilder, launched last week the world largest containership, the TEU 14,000 MSC Danit.
The naming ceremony recently took place at the company's Okpo shipyard in Geojae, Gyeongnam Province.
At the ceremony participated DSME vice president Ki Won-gang, MSC Israel president Edni Simkin and his daughter Danit. "MSC Danit", 365.5 meters in length, 51.2 meters in width, 29.9 meters in height, scales larger than the combined area of three football fields and 116.5 meters longer than the 63 building in Seoul.
The design, which shipbuilding sources describe as unique, locates the deckhouse in the centre while housing the engine room on the stern side. This is said to ensure broad visibility and provide stability to the giant ship apart from maximizing container stacking capacity.
The container ship is capable of loading 14,000 standard 20-foot container boxes which account for nearly half of the total amount of cargo that is being traded or moved per day at the port of Busan.
Furthermore, "MSC Danit" can run at a maximum speed of 25 knots an hour, which is equivalent to 46.3 kilometers per hour.
MSC Israel president Edni Simkin said that the naming of the ship after his daughter's name proves the appreciation MSC has towards the agency for their invaluable contribution toward the success the company has had in the Israeli trade.
