The SP-PSA International Port set a new productivity record for Vietnamese container ports after it handled a 67,100-DWT vessel operated by APL Ireland at an average rate of 103 containers per hour last week, Thai News Service reported.
APL Ireland has a capacity of 5,500TEUs and operates APL's PS1 direct weekly service from Vietnam to the western coast of the US, providing the industry's fastest transit service to the Pacific Northwest, connecting Vung Tau to Seattle in just 15 days.
The SP-PSA is a joint venture between the Sai Gon Port, Vinalines and PSA Vietnam Pte Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PSA International Pte Ltd (PSAI).
The SP-PSA became Vietnam's first deep-sea container terminal when it commenced operations in May 2009.
Located near the mouth of the Cai Mep-Thi Vai River, the SP-PSA will be developed in two phases, with the first phase of 600m of berths now operational.
When both phases (1,200m of berths) are fully completed, the port will have a projected annual capacity of more than two million TEUs of containers.
