Hamburg Süd will seek a general rate increase on all cargo moving from the U.S. East Coast and Eastern Canada to Europe as of May 1, the second increase this year.
The German carrier said it will increase rates on tariff cargo as well as cargo moving under existing service contracts by $150 per 20-foot container and $300 per 40-foot container.
This is the second GRI that Hamburg Süd has announced this year. It applied a GRI with increases of the same amount on Feb. 1.
Hamburg Süd’s move follows the tightening of trans-Atlantic capacity that resulted from the elimination of several liner services last year. A number of carriers have already raised rates on cargo moving in both directions, including Mediterranean Shipping Co., OOCL, Evergreen Lines, Hanjin and NYK.
