DHL launched direct less-than-container-load services connecting India’s largest container port of Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru) to Los Angeles.
DHL Global Forwarding said the weekly services, to be operated through its in-house carrier Danmar Lines, will help foster trade between India and the U.S., and offer reliable and cost-effective services to customers with a reduced transit time of 26 days on the route.
The company is rapidly expanding its LCL services from Indian ports to global destinations. In December last year, it launched a similar LCL service connecting Nhava Sheva to the Middle East region, followed by another service from Cochin to Europe, North America and other markets via the Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The expansion coincides with strong gains in containerized traffic moving through major Indian ports. According to the Indian Ports Association, major ports saw throughput surge 21 percent during the April-May period from a year earlier to 1.2 million 20-foot equivalent units. Volume at Nehru increased 17 percent to 751,000 TEUs from 643,000 TEUs.
