Container volume at West Coast ports increased 15 percent in the first six months of 2010 compared to the same period in 2009, according to the Pacific Maritime Association. The tally reflects all loaded containers, both inbound and outbound.
Containerized imports on the West Coast increased 17 percent while exports were up 11 percent.
In Los Angeles-Long Beach, the total container volume increased 16 percent compared to the first six months of 2009. Loaded inbound containers were up 15 percent and loaded outbound containers increased 18 percent.
Oakland reported an increase of 9 percent in total container volume. Imports were up 17 percent and exports increased 3 percent.
Portland was the only West Coast port to report a drop in total container volume. Portland's total container volume declined 17 percent. Imports increased 4 percent but exports were down 33 percent.
Total container volume in Seattle-Tacoma was up 16 percent, with imports increasing 31 percent and exports up 2 percent.
