Carriers back to Baghdad

8/12/2010 10:24:08 AM

Foreign airlines are starting to fly to Baghdad, seven years after the most-recent US invasion.

Currently, 12 mostly-Arab carriers connect Baghdad with Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Bahrain, Jordan, Iran, plus Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Soon, Germany's Lufthansa will fly from Germany and Iraqi authorities also are in talks with Austrian Airlines.

Airline officials say Baghdad routes are profitable - for example, it costs US$800 for an economy ticket to Jordan's capital Amman, some 800 km away.
