Evergreen Group ordered 10 container ships with capacities of 8,000 20-foot-equivalent units, following an identical order on July 2.
All of the ships will be built by Samsung Heavy Industries in Taipei, the carrier said.
The new ship orders are the second installment in a fleet upgrade by the Taiwanese carrier, which refrained from ordering new ships when most other lines were ordering large vessels during the last years before the global recession.
Evergreen is No. 4 on the JOC list of the world's Top 15 Container Fleet Operators.
Chairman Yung-fa Chang said in April that Evergreen’s plans for new ships include orders for 32 vessels with capacities of 8,000 TEUs, 20 with 7,024 TEUs, 20 with 5,364 TEUs and 20 or more 2,000-TEU ships that will be used for feeder services.
Seven of the latest 10-vessel orders will be built for Evergreen Marine. Three others will be for Evergreen International S.A. (Panama). The first of the newly ordered ships is scheduled for delivery in 2013.
